Broadstairs Folk Week – launch party
Broadstairs Folk Week starts the countdown to the start of the festival on the 11th August by venturing beyond the boundaries of its home town into the acclaimed Ramsgate Music Hall.
Folk Week has at its heart the traditional music and dance of the UK – and beyond, but in recent years, the artistes appearing represent a very broad definition of the word ‘folk’. There are some more ‘outreach’ gigs happening around Thanet – apart from tonight at RMH with Arlet – all with bands that may surprise audiences with their adventurous and experimental sound.
There are around 500 events during Folk Week, ranging from headline concerts in the 600 seater concert marquee in Pierremont Park to dances in the Pavilion in the park; workshops in music, song and dance, a full Children and Young People’s festival and masses of Morris dancing.
Tonight we are proud to have ARLET to help celebrate the launch of the festival.
“elliptical dance-derived tune patterns are woven from an impressive range of textures and dynamics, while the ensemble’s keen individual and collective musicianship displays a broadly experimental aesthetic and intuitive interactive rapport that’s derived as much from the classical chamber ensemble as from the jazz combo or the folk session and indeed from the Canterbury school of early prog.”
